Campaigners call on UK government to make mental health education compulsory in schools

The mental health charity The Shaw Mind Foundation (SMF) and HealthUnlocked, a social network for health, have joined forces to promote HeaducationUK, a campaign calling on the UK government to make mental health education compulsory in schools.

Almost 80,000 people have signed the petition in support of compulsory mental health education —SMF and HealthUnlocked have combined forces to ensure the petition receives 100,000 signatures by Wednesday 3 May.

The campaign originally had until 6 July to secure 100,000 signatures to ensure it could be considered for debate in Parliament. However, the deadline has since been changed because of the Snap General Election called for 8 June.

SMF and HealthUnlocked are calling on members of the public and encouraging members of its social network, to urgently sign and share the petition considering the revised deadline. The petition has been signed and shared by various mental health campaigners, including Stephen Fry, Norman Lamb MP and Alistair Campbell.

HeaducationUK founder, Adam Shaw, said:

We are urging everyone to sign and share our petition to help ensure the children of the future can be taught about mental health. We believe that by educating all young people about mental health in schools, we can increase awareness and encourage open and honest discussion. And we’re not alone.

CEO and Co-Founder of HealthUnlocked, Jorge Armanet, said:

We believe that raising awareness around mental illness and ensuring everyone has access to support is absolutely fundamental. We are delighted to formally back HeaducationUK, educating all young people about mental health within schools.
