A UK charity has renewed its call for a National Literacy Strategy to address the issues of dyslexia and poor literacy
Dr John Rack, the charity’s Director of Education and Policy, said a National Literacy Strategy was still needed as mainstream education was failing to fully embrace the concepts of special educational needs (SEN) in general and dyslexia in particular.
He also criticised the short-term ‘targets-driven’ mentality in Government and its failure to grasp the need for preventative intervention. Dyslexia Action says that despite the Special Educational Needs and Disability (SEND) Code of Practice making every teacher responsible for a child’s learning not all of them are trained in all aspects of SEND including dyslexia.
It believes a National Literacy Strategy should include an improved framework for Initial Teacher Training with better coverage of SEND in general. In particular, it believes the new framework should require teachers to have an understanding of all Specific Learning Difficulties (SpLD) and their impact on learning and social interaction, and knowledge of how best to support pupils with SpLDs, including how to overcome barriers to participation.
‘The reformed SEN system is about monitoring progress and intervening when things go wrong or are too slow,’ Dr Rack said. ‘Why not err on the side of caution and catch more problems before they become complicated by the frustrations of failure?’
